Om Ali/Umm Ali

Om Ali is a famous Egyptian dessert made of puff pastry/crossiont/bread, milk, cream, assorted nuts and coconut. Om ali is also known as Umm ali or Umali. It is actually Egyptian version of bread pudding. It is really delightful dessert with a creamy and rich texture. There are numerous variations of Om ali with different composition.

I made my version of a very simple yet tasty Om ali where I used good quality cornflakes along with toasted bread. This version of Om ali I first tasted in a famous Arabian Bakery and I liked it too much. A very simple recipe with brilliant outcome.

Recipe

  • Preparation time: 15 min
  • Cooking time: 55 min
  • Serves: 8
  • Difficulty level: Easy

Ingredients

  • 2 cup good quality milk bread pieces
  • 2 cup Cornflakes
  • 500 ml full fat Milk/Cooking cream
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted Butter
  • 2 tablespoon Condensed Milk
  • 1/4 cup dessicated Coconut
  • 1 cup mixed nuts and raisins
  • 1 cup heavy Cream
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon powder
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla essence
  • 1 teaspoon toasted bread crumbs

Steps

Tear some milk bread and toast them with 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter. We need about 2 cups of bread pieces.

Tear the bread pieces roughly
Toast them with 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter

Take a rectangular baking dish (7×7)”, place 1 cup of cornflakes at the bottom of the dish.

Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of dessicated coconut and mixed nuts and raisins.

Now spread the toasted bread to make a layer.

Next again spread 1 cup of cornflakes, followed by dessicated coconut, mixed nuts and raisins.

Now heat 1/2 litre of milk or cooking cream along with 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder and 1 teaspoon of vanilla essence. I used cooking cream in my recipe.

Let the milk/cream boil and add in 2 tablespoon of condensed milk. Cook in medium low heat until the milk/cream thickens a little.

Add sugar if you like. I didn’t add sugar as I like them less sweet to taste. Remove from heat.

Pour this flavourd, little thick cream/milk(warm) over the cornflakes-bread filled baking dish.

The warm cream/milk should fully cover the cornflakes-bread layers.

Preheat oven at 170 degree C for 10 minutes.

Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for about 30 minutes.

In the meantime, take 1 cup of cold heavy cream and whip with electrical beater until they form soft peak.

Keep the whipped cream in the refrigerator again.

After 30 minutes of baking, take out the dish from oven and remove the foil.

Spoon the prepared whipped cream at the top and spread lightly to make a thick layer of cream.

Sprinkle some mixed nuts and raisins. I also sprinkle some toasted bread crumbs.

Again bake the dish for 10 to 12 minutes or until the top layer becomes golden brown.

Delicious om ali dessert is ready now. When the dish become cools down, cut in individual pieces and place to serving dish.

Spoon some whipped cream and serve to your family and friends.
