Green Papaya Salad

Green papaya salad is a spicy salad made from shredded raw papaya. This salad is very popular throughout Southeast Asia. The green papaya salad was adapted from an ethnic Lao(Thailand) dish known as tam som, which used local fruits and vegetables such as raw mango or cucumbers as the main ingredient, seasoned to a primarily sour flavour salad.
This raw papaya salad is simply lip smacking which combines the taste of sour, sweet, salty and hot. A very easy to make and refreshing salad .

Recipe

Preparation time: 20 min

Serves: 4

Difficulty level: Easy

Ingredients

  • 1 cup  raw Papaya(cut in jullienne)
  • 1/2  medium sized Carrot(cut in jullienne)
  • 1/2  of a small Tomato
  • 8  roasted Peanut

  • 2  Garlic cloves
  • 1 tablespoon  Soya sauce
  • 1 teaspoon  Lemon juice

  • Salt to taste

For garnishing

  • 1  big lettuce leaf
  • Some  roasted and peeled peanuts

Steps

Clean and peel the fresh raw papaya nicely.

Cut in thin strips just like noodles. I use a jullienne grater. You can also cut with a knife.

Also cut carrot in noodle shape.

Mix both papaya and carrot julliennes.

Chop red chilli and garlic cloves.

In a mortar and pestle add in chopped garlic, chilli, roasted peanut, salt and sugar and crush well.

Transfer to a bowl and add soya sauce and lemon juice. Mix well.

Add thinly sliced tomato and mix well.

Now add this mixture to the papaya -carrot mixture.

Tear some mint leaves and add.

With a spoon mix everything very well. Adjust the seasoning in this stage.

Cover and keep aside for 10-15 minutes to enhance the flavour.

Spicy raw or green papaya salad is now ready. Serve the salad in a letuce leaf and sprinkle some roasted peanuts.
